....and I've only just begun. After shrimping the boat at HaulOver last Saturday night one aft l.e.d. has gone out. I'm sure it's nothing major. There's also interior blue l.e.d.'s that don't really show all that well....sun's coming up already. I've been asked by my party to put the stern green ones on a seperate switch than the interior blue. Change Order for tonight's wiring work....

As far as LED on navigation lights: LED's are known for dimming over time, and once they reach 70% they could be hazardous, so there is a whole being certified by USCG.

Found this post: I DID NOT WRITE THIS!

Just be aware that simply replacing an incandescent bulb with an LED bulb, in an older existing fixture designed with an incandescent bulb, changes it from being USCG certified to being USCG non-certified.

For me this matters as I was involved in a night time boating death, friends father was run down and killed, and I sat through almost two days of nav light testimony.

If it is not a concern of yours, having USCG certified lights, it's no big deal but I feel it is something folks need to at least be aware of.

Love it!

Been seeing the LED's being offered in boat magazines, but they are anywhere between $600-$2000 to do so, I was so excited to see the article 2 years ago, went the website and the cost was NO FREAKING WAY.

They are an absolute wonderful addition to any boat, you will not have to worry about be blowing off your lights, you will attract bait fish for fishing, and wake up some trouts too if you play inshore.

Did you make your own "pucks" or did you buy them and install them yourself! You have just managed to make 1000 people jealous!

Nope! About a month ago I stumbled onto an LED supplier here in Florida in which their website was under construction......and I stumbled upon THEIR SUPPLIER!
You are NOT going to believe their prices! I built two of my led shrimping lights utilizing my remaining clear 2 inch pvc from my old fluorescent....and I still have a good hunk of that pvc left to make an led magnum light! It's going to have 60 leds!!!

Oh....forgot to mention..... Each shrimping light cost me $30.00

Each of those green floods on the transom was about 18.00 each (cause I bought 3), I think......

What did you get? When I first heard about boat hulls and LED, I knew I had to be careful because of the boat crashing on the trailer at the ramp. SO I knew, I had bow and stern options. How many LED's per light?

This is just awesome so one can be seen. I love to night fish, and I believe in safety, and would want underwater lights to be seen.

Whatcha gonna do with yours hull LED's? Man, my heart skipped a beat when I went to that website....This girl loves toys! THANK YOU for the sharing! I see the dimmers too! I want dimmers for my shrimp lights!

No minimum order. My first order was $143, though. The floods were backordered, but I got them within 2 weeks. The green floods are back in stock....but you better hurry. The cheap led strips I put under the gunnels and a small one in the cabin (6 leds) are super bright. The under the gunnel strips each have 12 leds....and they are distracting while shrimping.....hence my crews request for them to be on a seperate switch.

The green floods have a useless couple of 3mm holes for mounting....Don't waste your time. I mounted mine on the transom with silicone sealant and ran the wires to the helm. The very worst part was waiting for the silicone to cure before splashing. They held up just fine!!! And man.....are they BRIGHT!!!!
Oh! And Capt.......sharing is what this site is all about from the beginning, right?

I live by the "share" standard. I am techy challenged and admire anyone that can just go out, order parts and make things happen! I know I want them on my boat. I was wondering if the gunnels would be a bad idea and your passengers confirmed the distraction...I really want them under the hull....but the trailer won't allow that. To me the lights need submerged....

I cannot count the times, we had to not only turn on nav lights but hit an on coming vessel with a floodlight so they noticed me. One cannot have to much safety, and I do want to add LED's to be seen. I know during Captain's school they talked about being careful with colors of lights on the boat...I forget the rules, and I think they apply to colored lights out of the water...law enforcement has one color, towing vessels have another...

Anyone know the rules on this off hand, or do I need to drag the books out?

Ah, it was flashing or revolving lights.

Are underwater lights legal? All the regs talk about is the nav and stern lights. Some states have been hassled when running with underwater lights on..and other States not...so this is another vague area of law.

Hey Q you and I must be on the same plane. I installed mine the same way you did electing not to drill holes in my pontoon. They even have discounts for larger orders. I have installed 4 bright white leds on my pontoon hull from Oznium. The web site is www.oznium.com Just don't order them with shipping by the post office. My first 2 orders disappeared into the USPS black hole never to be seen again. They are advertised as being submersible and not just waterproof which I also tried but those did not last very long. They look very bright at night out of the water and I am excited about trying them tomorrow night. I will take some pictures and hopefully post them on Saturday so everyone can see what they actually look like underwater. And Capt. Lee if you order some I would be glad to help you install them.

Nice boat Capt. Lee. I have installed 3 on one side of my 20' pontoon boat and one on the other so far. They are advertised to have a 120 degree light beam angle so I spread them apart about 4 ft. Since I have a sundeck on the back I lose about 4 ft of floor space so I actually have about 16' of shrimping space. I am including some foto's of my lights although they are not overly impressive in the daylight. On your boat it looks like it would be just below the decal line but I would be concerned about ripping them off when you trailer the boat back on. Your best location may take a little thinking for the optimal spot. I also have a led tube light I mounted on a piece of aluminum flat stock and use velcro to stick it on the floor and into the water. Then I actually attached 2 standard electrical plugs in a water proof boxs on the each side of the front deck wired directly to the battery and just plug in my led tube and fluorescent lights. It works really well and is easy to use. The trick to a semi permanent mount is getting it just low enough in the water so it does not bob in and out of the water all night and at the right angle to aim the beam away from the hull.

The pictures are not great but you get the idea. If anyone would like to come over and see it let me know.

Here's a pic or two of the shrimping lights I made from the Oznium rectangular channel lights (2.99 each, 10 per light). One silicone end (where the cord goes through) failed at HaulOver, and the light filled with water. No problem! They're waterproof! We just kept on shrimping. I washed it out, hung it to dry, and will re-do.....

I knew the skiff would be a problem especially when I crash it up on the trailer..the hull takes a beating on the bunks. So, I thought I would pick your all's brains..my biggest thing is I want LED's to be seen..not to shrimp with them....I have a little 17 ft. skiff for tidal water fishing in New Smyrna and the jetty's when we have a nice West wind. The night fishing and shrimping is scary when folks do not have the best of night vision...

I was thinking maybe adding the LED at the base of the transom somewhere with the sonar tranducer , that does not hit the bunk. This way I can cast off the back for bait at night too! Whatcha think?

Anyhoo, you all did a great job! As much as I cuss out pontoon boats on the river at times

who would not want a floating country club? They got to be the most fun to own, so many things you can do with them as far as build out and comfort!

Heck, I would take any of these boats too!

If you are wanting them installed on the transom like Q's that would be a cinch and a good choice. They really do work well for bait fish at night. The last time I used my tube led I had greenies around it almost all night. One night we had a huge school of sail cats just hovering in the current picking off the baitfish as they came near the light. There must have been 10 or 15 of them. The water was really clear that night they were about 4 ft down. The led beam goes out about 8-10 ft from the boat which is just about right for a cast net at least the way I throw one anyway. I think one on each side of the transom would be more than enough to light up the whole back of the boat. You might even be able to put one each on the side in the rear behind the bunk to shine off the sides a little more. And thanks for not hateing the partybarge too much. She may be ugly but she is a blast. Especially with the grandkids. The rail keeps them corraled real good. The guys I bought if from in Jville were a bunch of young lawyers whose only concern was being able to fit the keg on it to go to the game at the Landing.

Posts: 733 05/06/10 05:29 PM - 1 Limits 2012 - 1 Limits 2011	If you are wanting them installed on the transom like Q's that would be a cinch and a good choice. They really do work well for bait fish at night. The last time I used my tube led I had greenies around it almost all night. One night we had a huge school of sail cats just hovering in the current picking off the baitfish as they came near the light. There must have been 10 or 15 of them. The water was really clear that night they were about 4 ft down. The led beam goes out about 8-10 ft from the boat which is just about right for a cast net at least the way I throw one anyway. I think one on each side of the transom would be more than enough to light up the whole back of the boat. You might even be able to put one each on the side in the rear behind the bunk to shine off the sides a little more. And thanks for not hateing the partybarge too much. She may be ugly but she is a blast. Especially with the grandkids. The rail keeps them corraled real good. The guys I bought if from in Jville were a bunch of young lawyers whose only concern was being able to fit the keg on it to go to the game at the Landing.
