Posts: 3521 04/17/10 09:34 AM - 1 Limits 2012 - 4 Limits 2011	Tags : shrimp, shrimping, ponce, tides, volusia, oak hill, fishing, mosquito lagoon, capt lee noga, edgewater, titusville, brevard, shrimplight, led, greenie, light, nets, cfn, oakhill, haulover Specialist and I were there, WHERE were the shrimp,that pretty much sums up our nite Tide started out about 1:00 A.M. never really got moving though, the weather was good,the wind died down.I finally threw in the towel at 5:30, Allen was staying til sunup. With 2 of us dipping and Allens frame net, total take was probably about 70 shrimp, mostly mediums with a few large mediums. Am really looking forward the full moon. Went to ISAA BBQ today and talked to other shrimping folks. We also had members who limited from our community. 'Frimps are running deep.... Were you top water lighting or did you sink your halogens? Sounds like the wind died and you did not have much steering the shrimp. Durn! Who would have thunk' they would be taking the night off and not tease you boys to death? See, we just don't know what goes on in their pee brains! You get an A+++++ for trying tho, Babe. Posts: 3396 04/17/10 05:58 PM - 2 Limits 2012 - 10 Limits 2011	Yes it was pretty bad last night. I stayed for about an hour after you left Craig and probably got two more shrimp. It was very disappointing to say the least. Oh well, it was better than staying home and sleeping. You know, sleep really is over-rated...... BTW, you know you've been doing this shrimping thing for awhile when you can just look in the bucket and guess how many shrimp there are. Craig, you guessed that there were 70 shrimp between the two of us. The actual count was 77 plus this guy... which would put the official count at 78. I wish i had a boat. You guys out in the river are killing me with all of these full pull reports. I hope to be out in a boat with my neighbor this coming Thursday night. Maybe I can still hit it. That is a rock shrimp right? Sorry the picture is so fuzzy. It was taken with my phone. He only measures 2" and was dead from being in the frame net. Last Edited By: specialist 04/17/10 06:02 PM. Posts: 7778 04/17/10 06:12 PM Captain USCG Licensed NEW SMYRNA DELTONA	Aww, Hon'...I know you certainly do not have the freedom's to pick up your toys and move when the shrimp do not cooperate. You dealt what your dealt when standing at a pier. When I heard that the Edgewater folks near the ramp limited I got "giddy" thinking you got a piece of the action too! I was hoping to find a consistent correlation between the E.W.area and the S. Causeway pier, and I think we just realized there is no "run" correlation but we may still have a "size" correlation. The only think I can think off is the tide was week and there was nothing reall steering them. When this happens they don't "thicken" up into a "troop" hence do not forma "vein" or "stream". The frame nets been doing 50% of more of the harvests for the boaters, so I am told. ShrimpC said you all used a frame net, and it did not do well, so we know the 'frimp did not run deep. Did anybody do well on the pier? Is there any way this could be a lighting issue? To much glare on a weak current? Hopefully next week you get to inhale some carbon monoxide and join us boaters! The tides will be getting better every day. The FIRST QTR moon is on the 20th [means weak current], and typically this means the frame nets won't stay open and the shrimp back out. If the water level remains low which it is, this could mean dirty weak water. So, we hope for some winds! If you can get out in next week or so, your golden! Oh, did I mention my friend snagged a "Bat Ray" in his frame net? Full size? You still get an A+++++ in my book for putting in the time hunting! THAT is pure passion! You make me proud! They mimic the tail of a lobster, hard shell [rock hard] and spiny. They spawn in 120 to 240 feet of water. They average about 2 inches in length. They a re VERY SWEET tasting! I think your right about a steering current, because the ones we did get were wandering like they do as the tide is about to change. There were also 3 boats north of pier and they weren't breaking any records. This was just one of those off nites, that leave ya hopin for the best next time See Ya

Sea Worthy Posts: 71 04/18/10 08:58 PM - 6 Limits 2011	Hey shrimpcraz i was one the boats you saw north of the bridge, full pull man. it took me a while to get lined up in the stream. i probably moved ten times, my buddy was in the flow but i couldn't get it right. after i was done i found the the main flow, if i would have found it sooner i would been gone in an hour.it was a flow you dream about. not much dipping just stick the net in the water and empty about every 5 min.i was watching you guys working your butt off on the pier. it sounded like you were fun though

I have a question into FWC about frame nets tied to pier, I know I do not have that answer and rather quote from a badge. I will report their answer. We need to be safe vs. sorry. "Frame net" means a net in the form of an elongated bag kept open by a rigid frame that is buoyed by floats and is not fished or dragged along the bottom. A Frame net that is dragged or towed is considered to be a trawl, which is not allowed for the recreational harvest of shrimp. Frame nets are not allowed to harvest shrimp in any waters of the Southeast Region in Dade County." I'm puzzled as well...

You may have one frame net deployed from a boat or from any structure that is *not* 1) an operational bridge (a bridge transports people and vehicles from one place to another) 2) a causeway (a causeway transports people and vehicles from one place to another) 3) a catwalk that is attached to a bridge or causeway The fishing pier in New Smyrna does not qualify as any of those three stipulations, therefore it is allowable to deploy a frame net. Is there enough current there to successfully keep the frimps in the sock of the net and not swimming out every two seconds. I had thought of doing this from land (dirt grass) wading out 'near' NOT under the 528 bridge but others tell me the current is just not there to keep the net open and the frimps stuck in there... Interesting point though. I agree with your perception of the wording on that law. fb

My buddy who was born and raised there said that the end of the fishing pier is right in the middle of the old channel when there was a draw bridge at that spot. He said when they built the high rise bridge, they actually moved the channel to the East. I have a tendancy to believe it as the water must be 15-20ft deep at the end of the pier. When I had the frame net up there last week, the current was only moderate and there was no problem keeping the shrimp in the sock of the net.

Posts: 3396 04/20/10 07:31 PM - 2 Limits 2012 - 10 Limits 2011	Nuke, I've only recently started to shrimp off of the pier in New Smyrna thanks to information and an invite from Shrimpcraz. I have only seen my net there and I brought it for the first time last week. The couple times I have been, there has only been Shrimpcraz, myself and a couple of Hispanics. There has been plenty of room for more shrimpers. My frame net is not a collapsible. It is made from 1" schedule 40 PVC, so it keeps itself open. I plan on being up there this Saturday night.
