Building your own simple stuff to the exact requirments of a certain applications gives you and advantage and pride of do it your self ownership that works.

I make not only my own light weights but also my own terminal tackle like sinkers jig heads and buck tails. I have also made many custom rods in the past when I had more time on my hands. All of these items saves me money and give me an edge in certain places and situations.

Lead is costly if you buy it in any shape or size. For best cost effective weights for lights or fishing I look around and save up wheel weights and roofing lead that I get from friends. It works out as I get lead and then give them something they want out of it also.

Molds can be made easy or store bought. I weld at work and have scrap so it is easy for me to make certain molds like the paramid. Do it mades alot of nice ones too and you can buy a blank mold from them and then take it to a machine shop to get custom shape like flair jigs molds made from them.

For a basic lead weight for shrimping you could us something as easy as a tin can mold and pour the hot lead into it and finish it off with a Stainles ring bolt on top for an eye.

The grapnel anchor is also an easy to make bottom holder like the one above and can be made out of just simple cheep rebar welded together and stuck through a lead or steel tube like the one above. They work great in sticky bottom areas that may eat a paramid lead weight. A hard pull on a grapnel will straighten out the tines and the rig should come free; just rebend and reuse. This is why allot of folks use them at inlets..

FYI if you do make a paramid mold make a big one that will make a 15 pd weight. Then you can use the same mold to make smaller weight also. I have them from 2 to the 15 pd max in multible sizes.
