You are now the in-house expert, and maybe you would not mind me asking you some questions. How do you set up and get enough space to shrimp with everybody wanting to do the same thing? Do you use lights? Frame Nets? How do you not tangle equipment if everyone puts out lights or frame net? How do you handle people territorial. We have a female member here, "Doozie" and she ran into folks who rope off an area ahead of time. If the shrimp are running they call their friends to come down to the pier...but they rope off a block of pier in advance. That is NOT fair....so any info you have on pier shrimping would be great... On the New Smyrna pier you only need about 8 feet of clear railing to set up. I use 2 floating lites spaced 6 to 8 feet apart and the cords lay on the dock at the railing. I usually stand between the lights and limit myself to the distance I can comfortably reach with my net without moving to far. For the most part everybody works together to allow each other enough room to do their thing. I have seen some frame nets in use, the only problem with this is the layout of the river south of the pier allows pockets of natural debris to collect and all this stuff moves with the outgoing tide. Its no fun picking through piles of wet leaves. I feel the same as you about territoriality, if your gonna stake out a spot set your equipment up and STAY WITH IT! Don't come by at noon and stick your net in a rod holder hole to claim your spot and then go home and wait until dark to come back. A net in a rod holder hole means nothing to me. I experienced this myself, I had all my stuff set up and this guy walks up and says this is my net my spot. Well where were you 2hours ago when I got here? This was a one time occurrence. A little tolerance and civility goes along way and fortunately most of the folks on the pier practice this. I have noticed that submerged lites tend to do better than my floaters. Can't wait to get my hands on one of Nite Owls Lil Greenies I know it will improve my take. Keep it simple is the best thing here the less stuff you have to tote from the parking area the better. I use a collapsible grocery cart {stolen from Mother-in law}that carries everything but my net,and doesn't take up a lot of space on the pier,and fits easily in my van. Tangling issues are rare and usually involve a fisherman pulling his line across someones deployed frame net. Yup, I am more convinced then ever your our resident pier "go to" guy. You wrote that beautiful and you write very clearly. I want to photograph you one night dipping in New Smyrna with my Nikon. I want people to see that YOU can shrimp if you have NO boat. So many people ask me about structure dipping and I honestly, have no idea except for what I think you all do. I do not want to pass along "guesses", so I tell people I am clueless. Well, I am "clued" now, and you if I could impose, would like you to be our in house "guru". Folks have questions like: How long do my light cords need to be? How much weight do I need to add to my line? Do you need a light near the frame net? How do you handle the 15 ft sock that sticks out if you hang the frame net over the side? Do I need a longer dip handle, perhaps add an extension handle? Do you pop the shrimp heads at the pier? These are the questions people ask me over the years. I know Ron O'Brien at times will dip at the New Smyrna Pier. I am not sure which one your at. But he goes to the one under the South Causeway. Posts: 3521 03/30/10 11:11 AM - 1 Limits 2012 - 4 Limits 2011	Capt. Lee Impose away, really not an imposition I figure it's good Karma and perhaps the shrimp gods will SMILE on all. I use the same pier that Cap'n Ron uses, I'll keep you posted as to when I'll be there, so you can get some pic's maybe we could load one in for my avatar so I'll have a face instead of a blue blob. I'm planning on going tonight will be there about 10:30 have to clear this with the little lady first shes on her way back from Georgia right now. Shouldn't be a problem when I say shrimp she says are you there yet. In regards to your questions, 20 foot long cords is plenty for floaters or submerged lites, presently no one is weighting their lites they let them swing with the current with the lites about 2 feet below the surface. Weighting them and setting them deeper may require longer cords, don't know yet, I'll have to do some recon to determine the depth of the water around the pier. The current can really get moving sometimes, like this past Wednesday I swear them bugs had afterburners on. I think one of your 8# weights would be a good start here. I haven't seen anyone use a lite with their frame net yet, as far as the length of the sock, you have to watch the fisherman and remind them that the back end of the net is at least 15 ft. past where the rope enters the water. The pier is not the ideal place to dump and sort your frame net due to the gaps between the deck boards, I've lost more than one shrimp that way. I got my net from a neighbor non-extendable, so I had to improvise with available materials I attached a heavy duty paint roller extension pole to it, not pretty but it works. I think most of the commercially available extension nets will work, spend a few extra $ for a heavier handle though, because you will be using the full length of the handle and I'm sure this puts some extra stress on the net as a whole. I just dump my shrimp into a 5 gallon bucket with some water in it and take them home to pop the heads. I don't have a frame net, I prefer chasing the little buggers, some get away some DON'T, also makes the ones that don't get away taste even better. This also allows me to be selective and let the smalls go on to grow into the elusive ZILLA. I hope this helps if you have any further questions fire away

I'm betting you will be astounded by what you'll see in that 23 foot circle of light. You'r buddies on the left and right will want to shrimp in light field as well. Shrimp all night with this LED light on a motor cycle battery.

Posts: 3521 03/31/10 10:56 PM - 1 Limits 2012 - 4 Limits 2011	Slow night at South Bridge pier, only got 70 mostly large a few jumbos, tide started out around midnite. They ran good for 1st hour then slowed ,then stopped by 3:00 A.M. There was a fella there with a frame net , got 110 on first try and still had net in the water when I left at 3:00 a.m. I had planned to stay longer to see if they might run again later in tide, but it got a little cooler than I expected. If they had still been running the cold wouldn't have been an issue. Will probably take a break until tide times get friendlier.

Posts: 3521 04/05/10 01:38 PM - 1 Limits 2012 - 4 Limits 2011	Sunday 4/4 A personal best for me at the New Smyrna pier got 1 1/4 gallon. All in the last 1 1/2 hours of outgoing tide and first hour of incoming, mostly large&jumbos got there at 8:30 left at 11:00 hadn't planned on going but glad I did. Will be there again tonite,get an extra hour of outgoing. Hoping for the best. Had one just a hair short of 7" Got a couple pics to show off a little if I can get them loaded. Sure hope this season last's alittle longer.

Posts: 3521 04/06/10 11:34 AM - 1 Limits 2012 - 4 Limits 2011	4/5 New Smyrna pier, 7:30 til midnite 1 1/2 gallons lotta 2s&3s several times there were 6 to8 in view ,makes things interesting with an 18 foot handle and lites and pilings to maneuver around. Which ones do I chase,which ones do I chase. I think Capt. Lee is right about water temp. I saw more smalls last nite than the nite before, but still got mostly larger mediums and large with about 40 jumbo's. This is the best I've ever seen at the pier, they ran good until tide stopped then picked back up for first hour of incoming. Dipped the largest one, almost 7" on the incoming tide. Will probably go 1 or 2 more times this week until the moon goes away.

Not many people can pull good numbers, and you definitely know your way around there! Outstanding! The smalls are definitely showing up in various parts of the river for sure...it is that time of the season...but let me add, there is still a LARGE amount of fatty 5 inch mediums, larges and 'Zilla's in the river...don't hang those nets up just yet folks! If you do not have a boat, get to a pier! The larger shrimp are still running in large quantity!
