Ormond Beach saturday night |

Well, went back to CW under US 40 again. Four days after the full moon, not a good idea. Shrimping very slow. Got like 30 is all. Using the traps I made. The bigger traps caught most of the shrimp. One small trap only got two all night. Place was so crowed. Guess the words out about the shrimp running. Saw a lot of new nets and new faces. One guy who was there last Saturday. told me he was there Friday night and got 1/2 a pull. That night after 4 hours he only had 1/4 pull. Couldn't test the lights the way I wanted, too many peeps. Got bored tried fishing. Got one rod setup to get bait. Has 3 #12 hooks on it. Used a small maybe 1/4" piece of shrimp. dropped it in the water not 10 second later got the first bait fish.

You got that right! There is a never a down side for having gone out to harass the waters. That is a shame it was so busy, that kind of chaos limits your location and spot choices. Sometimes it trap placement is more key than tide positioning. But, you got more hands on time with the traps, and realize now they are NO kinks or trap adjustments that are needed.
So, a job well done! Now, you just need to find the "luck" [when time meets opportunity] and soak those traps! ![]() |

Sorry it wasn't a bit more productive for you.
A 3" Sailcat on a 2/0 hook...priceless! |

Jack, I'm hoping to have a friend teach me the basics for casting a net and catching shrimp near the Granada bridge on Sunday, so I'm curious to know what time would be best. I know almost nothing about shrimping, but I have talked to several people who said it's pointless to try until 10PM or so. However, I saw a good number of boats near the walkway under the bridge, and they were doing OK around 6PM, although nobody was throwing from the walkway.
Since it seems you've hit that spot a few times, do you have any recommendations on the best time of day? Thanks! |

well, I've only been there two times. I don't have a cast net ...yet. I go at 7:00 to 7:30 pm. and set up my traps. Incoming tide seems best; bigger shrimp. ormond tides is 4 hour diff. from PI. Full high or full low tide shrimping very slow. At 7:00, 7:30 lots of peeps. A lot leave around 10:00pm or so. Best around full moon or it seems so. Only day I go is on Saturday nights because of work. A lot of peeps go to the north side pier and climb down on the piling and cast from there. Hope that helps. next time I go will be on sept. 25 two days after the full moon. Should be a good night.(maybe

I was in boat at Granada last night (Friday). When we were pulling the boat onto the trailer I noticed people throwing nets and remembered Jack talking about it. After the boat and gear were properly stowed and my buddy left, I went out to the pier to see how they were doing. Now this was around 8-8:30pm that I was out there watching. I saw an older Asian couple walking out while we were putting the boat onto the trailer and by the time I walked out (maybe 15 mins) they had about 1/2 gallon of jumbos already. If they kept up that pace, they would have limited in a couple of hours or so. There was about 12 or 15 kids and adults throwing nets. When I saw their catches, it almost made me want to go back to the truck and get my net too. I had given the complete 2-2 1/2 gallons I caught from the boat to the owner of the boat. Not that I need any more shrimp or anything.
I'm just saying! South Daytona |

Thanks for the info! We'll be there mid to late afternoon, so we might be early. I have a commitment in the evening, so i couldn't stay much past 7 or so. I'll try to write back what we end up getting, if anything, but I hope to learn how to throw a net without ripping out any teeth!

Mudbucket told me the same thing. The pier jutting out at Granada is yielding full pulls for cast netters on land.

Decided not to go early afternoon as planned, but went out for about 90 minutes after 6PM. Only pulled up 30 shrimp, but half of my casts were useless (my first time casting a net), and the rest used only 50% of the 8' net I got. However, a pair of experienced shrimpers working off a pylon had about 4 gallons of shrimp in 3 hours. Really hoping they'll still be running in 2 weeks when I can go again, as I've caught the bug!

Jonfal,
Let me know before you go the next time. I live in the area and if I'm not tied up, I could come up to the pier and help with some quick lessons and throw with you. South Daytona |

Shrimp brothers and I are going out on Tuesday afternoon. We have previously pulled in 5 gallon pails from the first red buoy north of the bridge to fifty yards south of the bridge. Best results were in the channel. I saw your response to my initial post but can't find it again...don't know which forum to look in. Yes we have a depth and fishfinder but I have no idea how to read the fish finder (it's a Hummingbird model). I'll let you know how we do.

Cap't Frank and I came in to the Granada ramp at 11am on Saturday and one guy was throwing the net from the pier then. Couldn't tell what the catch was cause we left straightaway to go to the Mininar. Frank and I did see a large cloudlike on the sonar and I asked the Cap't what is that he grinned at me and said shrimp. Who knows...may have been!
