There are numerous ways. The best way is the way that gives you the most comfort and control. Here are some ideas to try.

Some can pop heads with their hands and do 1 shrimp in each hand, and get both hands to pop the heads at the same time. THIS is not my technique. They place their thumb behind the head plate and squeeze as they push the head off. I have little hands, and I am not one to bruise them up if I can help it.

I use a simple aerosol can lid....I am fussy tho. I used to love the "Spot Shot" can lids and then they changed them. The best aerosol lid is a lid that is thin and not formed into a dull thick rounded edge. Some folks use tuna and cat food cans.

Using the cans or lids allows you to ergonomically pop heads off hundreds of shrimp and not get carpal tunnel syndrome. Place the lid behind the hard head plate, push down on the lid [will sever head from shrimp] and scoop head into sink bowl.
When you buy the 30" or smaller dip net, the sock end is normally threaded shut. Some locals make their nets and give you a quick escape dumping system. This was popular years ago and over the last few years, the tubed sock has been hard to locate.

You can make your own!

I went to Wal-Mart and bought some 80lb monofilament leader, and I bought 100lb crimping sleeves [offshore types found in bait stores]. Yes, it is not fair we have to buy an entire pack of these crimps when we only need 1 - 2 of them.

I took probably 24 inches of mono leader, and weaved it into the netting. This qualifies as one of those pain in the tail things to do. But, within 20 minutes you will be done threading the net.
From Member: ShrimpNFish, "John" asked.....

I have a couple questions
regarding when to shrimp:

I have seen over the years some reports of cast netting during the day
into pods of shrimp in the ICW... are there times this is actually
doable for the recreational shrimper? My other question is: Do the
shrimp run only at night during an outgoing tide, or do they run on all
outgoing tides... and we just can't see them during the day and that is
why everyone goes out in the evening? I seem to see shrimp boats off
the coast during the days and nights and therefore thought that maybe
they do migrate out the inlet on both tides. Aha!!! That just gave me
another question... where are all these shrimp going that are headed
north from Melbourne-to-Titusville-to-Oak Hill-to-Edgewater and
north???? Are they headed out Ponce Inlet? And if so, why are there
not a lot of shrimpers dipping at the mouth of the inlet?

Curious minds...

If you have a question, post it here or in email to me and I will respond on the blog.....[leenoga @ cfl.rr.com]

The best times to shrimp are around the NEW and FULL moons. The reason is the gravitational 3 degree tilt causes an EBB tide, a flooding tide as water pushes in and raises water level. When the tides change [every 6 hours], the outgoing moves with anger, speed and power to push the water out. This causes a great force to move the shrimp down the river during an outgoing tide.

The reason the shrimp are moving down the river is because they are heading to the inlet to go into the ocean and spawn. So they will favor any condition where there is some strong locomotion.

The best winds are SOUTH and EAST and all the variants between those 2. The worst wind is a NORTH wind because it causes a chop and the shrimp run deeper.

Shrimp run when they want to run, and we can only predict the best of conditions that we have seen them run about in past...
